The Business and Family Consumer Sciences Department employs an experienced and dedicated staff. We offer students a wide range of business and life skills classes from introductory level to the use of advanced technology in our computer applications and multimedia classes to diverse academic and technological opportunities for students which emphasize critical thinking and decision making skills in such areas as wellness, human relations, parenting, and employability.

Our two work experience programs are among the best in the state. We offer an Internship program to seniors who work 15-20 hours per week for pay and credit, in a supervised business environment. Our advanced marketing work experience program also offers 15 - 20 hours of work and pay each week, in a supervised environment where Marketing is emphasized. The Accounting program at Mountain Pointe, includes an Honors Advanced Accounting class where students earn a weighted grade and earn 6 hours of college credit. We are the only business department in the state to offer this opportunity in the Accounting area.

Program Highlights:

  • Television Productions: This two semester course prepares students to plan, record, and present projects that are acceptable for use in a typical TV broadcast. The class introduces students to video and audio editing as well as various graphics programs. The Business Department has built and maintains a 3-camera broadcasting studio on site, and utilizes the latest technology to create virtual studios and incorporate on-screen graphics into a more industry-like approach to television productions.   • Advanced Child Development: In Advanced Child Development, students will study the development of children, ages three through five. Students will develop lesson plans and activities to be used in the child care center. Health and safety issues will be addressed, as well as the study of exceptional children. Career possibilities in the field of childcare will be researched. Students may experience applications supporting the Arizona Academic Math Standards. Upon completion of this course, students will be in readiness to secure a food handler's card and apply for childcare certification. Students enrolling in this course will also enroll in the Advanced Child Development Lab.
  • Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is a nonprofit educational association of students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. FBLA goals are to: Promote competent, aggressive business leadership, understand American business enterprise, establish career goals, encourage scholarship, promote sound financial management, develop character and self-confidence, and facilitate transition from school to work. To accomplish these goals, FBLA holds conferences and seminars, sponsors a competitive awards program, produces national publications, and provides scholarships, programs, and other services for its members. By participating in the competitive events at the state and national levels, students gain practical experience in goal setting, planning, and plan implementation.
  • DECA, a national association of marketing education students, provides teachers and members with educational and leadership development activities to merge with the education classroom instructional program. DECA is not extracurricular; it is an integral part of the classroom instructional program. DECA chapters attract students who are interested in preparing for entrepreneurial, marketing or management careers. Working hand-in-hand with the education and business communities, DECA's goal is for its student members to develop a "career success kit" to carry into their business and personallives after graduation; one that includes: occupational competencies needed for careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship; leadership abilities; social and business etiquette; understanding and appreciation of civic responsibility; ethical behaviorin personal and business relationships; understanding the role of our free enterprise system in the global economy. Involvement in DECA provides career, scholarship, conference, and competition opportunities. Students are also invited to attend a five-day Financial and Fashion Marketing Experience tour to New York City.
