SPRING 2002 REVIEW

Corona athletic programs had another fine year and spring sports finished off a very strong season. Thanks again to all our athletes, parents, and coaches who make Corona among the best and support our students at all levels!
Some of the many highlights include:

Spring Tempe All-City athletes recognized at the May 13 awards banquet were Brian Smith, Nate Combs, Matt Michael, Josh Tarnow, and Mike Pollack, Baseball; Katie Logan, Katie Laing, Tara Hansen, Megan Hansen, and Becky McDonald, Softball; Katie Morgan, Josh Kinnaman, and Steven Koehnemann, Track; Chau Phan, Lynley Wasson, Ryan McBride, and Brett Bender, Tennis; and Corey Swirtz, Volleyball. CdS had by far the most All-City athletes of any Tempe school!

Coach Jen Ray and the Girls’ Softball team had an awesome 33-3 record, were Central Region Champs and State Quarterfinalists. Coach Ray was named All-East Valley Tribune Coach of the Year! Megan Hansen, Megan Willis, Becky McDonald, and Katie Laing were selected 5A All-East Valley First Team and along with Katie Logan were selected for the All-Southeast Valley Team. All-Southeast Valley Team Honorable Mention was Tara Hansen and Jacquie Mason. The JV team, under Coach Chapin, finished with a super 19-0 record. The Frosh were 15-3. Coach Maisel’s frosh teams have gone 72-3 the last four years!

The Boys’ Volleyball team, under Coach Kelly Farnsworth, came out of nowhere to reach the 5A State Quarterfinals! The Aztecs had a huge state victory over Red Mountain and were led by All-Region setter Corey Swirtz. Selected Second Team All-Southeast Valley was Casey Day and Corey Swirtz. Honorable Mention All-Southeast Valley Team was Adam Baxter. Coaches Rhome and Maxfield led the JV to a winning season and were very helpful to the varsity at play-off time.

The Baseball team, under Coach Ron Davini, had a very successful 20-13 season and a second place finish in the Central Region. The Aztecs qualified for the State Tournament yet again! Nate Combs was named All-State and the Southeast Valley Baseball Player of the Year. Nate, Brian Smith, Josh Tarnow, and Mike Pollack were named All-Central Region and selected for the All-Southeast Valley Team. Coach Davini completed his 25th season as head coach – many thanks for all of the years of dedication and leadership! Coach Himmelstein and Coach McDonald led the JV and Frosh teams to solid seasons.

The Girls’ and Boys’ Track teams had a great group of young athletes led by Coach Jeff Griffin and his staff. Katie Logan was State 5A Champion in Girls’ Pole Vault and was ranked the #1 sophomore vaulter in the United States. Steven Koehnemann and Josh Kinnaman were named All Central Region. Pole Vault Coach Jeff Guy was named Track Athletic Congress High School Vault Coach of the Year!

The Girls’ Tennis team did an excellent job led by Coach Carol Sandvig. The ladies finished the season as Central Region Champions. The ladies, led by freshman Lynley Wasson, were also State Quarterfinalist and Kiwanis Metro Tournament Runners-Up!

Coach Rick Wanta led the Boys’ Tennis team to a second place finish in Region and were paced by State 5A Champion Ryan McBride. Ryan was undefeated with a 30-0 record and achieved 5A All-State status for a third time!

Student athletes for the month of May were Becky McDonald, Softball and Josh Kinnaman, in Boys’ Track.
The Corona del Sol Letter Club Senior Athletes of the Year for 2001-2002 were Breanna Pursley, Jeff Webb, and Ryan McBride. Best of luck to all of our Aztecs!

A certified copy of the birth certificate shall be required of all contestants.

Thereafter, the athlete must be enrolled in and passing a minimum of five (5) classes (not including study hall; only credit-earning classes can be counted as one of the five (5) classes for eligibility) throughout the time of eligibility. Take the physical card (completed and signed by the doctor), your parent’s/legal guardian’s notarized signature, either the receipt for insurance or the insurance waiver card, and your birth certificate to the Athletics Office. The cards and a copy of your birth certificate will be kept in the Athletics Office. An equipment card will be given to you starting August 5.
5. Take the yellow equipment card and blue emergency card to your coach when practice begins.

NOTE: If you received equipment the preceding school year and did not return it or did not pay for the replacement of any lost or damaged equipment, additional equipment will not be loaned to you.

If you go out for another sport, you must pick up your equipment card from the equipment manager, and sign up again in the Athletics Office. Remember that you are borrowing the equipment from the school. Please take care of it as if it were your own. You are responsible for washing uniforms during the season and keeping them in good condition.
